Senior Moments are Funny but There Could be Darkside…

Sometimes my 13 year old son will look at me in disbelief at a question I’ll ask him — not because I’m being overprotective or old fashioned, but because I just asked the same question 5 minutes before. Sound familiar? How about forgetting the name of that thing –oh yeah, the glove compartment!

Our society has found humor in these increasingly common bouts of forgetfulness with the term ‘Senior Moments’. But when you are relatively young and you are cognizant of the very real change in your brain’s capacity to remember things, it’s worth a little investigation.

There seems to be quite a bit of research on memory boosting exercises and supplements but it seems that these things would be treating the symptoms and not the cause. What could possibly be the cause of so many 40 -50 year olds having Senior Moments?

One possible explanation that fascinates me is what I heard Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (currently treating Pres. Clinton) say regarding mini strokes happening to even young and otherwise healthy people. You can be driving, sleeping, working, and not realize that anything has happened. Moreover, you will not see any real symptoms because you still have the capacity to redirect function to other parts of your largely healthy brain. Watch this clip of Dr. Esselstyn from minute 27 to hear it explained by this renown physician.

With low blood pressure and no cholesterol or weight issues, I thought I was safe from cardio-vascular illness. This is definitely not the case. With the brain and heart inextricably connected in function and wellness, improving circulation in the veins and arteries through diet makes a whole lot of sense to me now. Pass the broccoli and hold the fried chicken!

The Magical Healing Power of Food

Let thy food be thy medicine. -Hippocrates
Hippocrates believed that the human body has the innate ability to heal itself of disease. This is also the basis of Eastern medicine but the exact opposite of the modern pharmaceutical industry’s claims that there is a pill for every ill.

Dr. Linus Pauling, winner of 2 Nobel Peace Prizes, said that “Optimum nutrition is the medicine of tomorrow.” Not pills, not advanced surgery, but food. Bon appetit!

Computer All Nighter Myth

Do you leave your computer on all night, maybe turning your screen off as you head off to bed? Many rumors abound as to why it makes sense to do so including the famous, “It takes more energy to boot it back up in the morning”. Well it simply isn’t true.

Here are the facts:

A typical computer uses 300 Watts of energy, the equivalent of 3 very bright lamps!

Turning off your computer when not using could save you up to $219 a year. Even if you are using energy saving down mode, you would still save over $100 if you actually turned it off.

Read more about how energy computers and other electronic devices use at How Stuff Works.

Cell Phone Radiation: Tips to Minimize Exposure

Although scientists are still debating the negative effects of cell phone radiation, there’s nothing wrong with minimizing your exposure as much as possible. Here are some tips:

1. Most Fun: Use a retro handset from Moshi Moshi or Yubz.

2. Most Practical: Use a wired headset

3. Easiest: Use the speakerphone

4. Smartest: Wait until after making connection to put phone to your ear. The most radiation occurs when phone is making contact with cell tower.

5. Cleverest: Teeter totter the phone: phones emit much less radiation when receiving than when transmitting. Every millimeter counts so teeter phone away from your ear as you talk.

6. Safest: Don’t put phone to your ear when in a moving vehicle. Not only does the phone emit more radiation when in motion, but talking while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk.

7. Most Fashion Forward: Don’t put the phone in your chest pocket or pants pocket. Not only do you have an unattractive bump, you are also exposing your body to more radiation than if you put it in your purse or briefcase.

Great Scotts! Never rake again??

Raking leaves in the fall is such a huge part of our American suburban culture that most of us don’t think twice about getting rid of all those fallen leaves littering our lawns each year. Last week when I saw a Scott’s commercial advocating mowing the leaves versus raking and chucking, I was intrigued. Could this be a viable alternative or is this just another big corporate attempt at greenwashing?

Here’s the commercial:

Public service or Greenwashing?

Can this be true?

Apparently, research conducted at Cornell, Purdue, Rutgers, Michigan State and other universities since the early 1990’s supports this opinion. Here’s an example of the research:

“Between 1995 and 1998 researchers at Michigan State set mower decks to cut at three inches, then mowed up to 450 pounds of leaves per 1,000 square feet of lawn each autumn (that’s equivalent to about eighteen inches of leaves).

At such a high rate, very little grass could be seen at the end of the mowing season. However, once growth resumed the following spring the remaining leaf litter quickly decomposed. In this study not only was the excessive volume of leaves not harmful, the shredded leaves actually improved lawn quality over time as organic matter and nutrients in the decomposing leaves was returned to the soil.”

Yard waste is the second worst polluter in America’s landfills today (#1 is paper). If leaves can truly be mowed and left on lawns instead of raked, collected and thrown away, this could have a significantly positive impact on our environment.

Great job Scotts! I’m impressed and look forward to experimenting on my own lawn this year.

Celebrate: BDay Presents from Philly

Having grown up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, I am a Philly girl through and through. I am super picky about my cheesesteaks (provolone, wit!) and the memory of a city gone wild when the Phillies won the 1980 World Series is seared into my mind forever.

I have 3 friends with similar birthdays and this year I scored with this cute Phillies baseball shirt I found on a recent trip to my favorite city of brotherly love.

Here’s how I bobowrapped one of them using a variation of the Single Handle Wrap found on page 46 of The Wrapping Scarf Revolution.
First fold the t-shirt so that it is a nice solid piece instead of all bendy wendy.
Then place items on the diagonal in the center of a small size wrap and tie opposite corners in a square knot (a secure double knot).
Bring the other 2 corners together and tie a snug half knot which is just the first part of a double knot.
Bring those corners together and tie a square knot to make a little handle. Presto your’e done!
Happy Wrapping to all my fellow Phillies fanatics. ;-)

The Perfect IPad Application: The Kitchen Cabinet!

Is the IPad on your wish list for things to get this year? I really didn’t understand the hype and then I actually tried one at the Apple store. Call me a wimp but within 30 seconds of holding an IPad, I felt fatigued by the sheer weight of the thing. Yes I’ve had carpal tunnel and maybe I’m a little more sensitive than most, but I could not imagine why I would want such a thing when a laptop with a keyboard worked just fine for me.

Then I saw this video on Guy Kawasaki’s Alltop page and the IPad immediately shot to #1 on my most wanted list. Take a look:

Like most Moms (and a lot of Dads), I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. With this toy, you may never get me out! No more printing out recipes or unwieldy stereo cluttering the kitchen. I could even cook while listening to my favorite webcast or watching some Korean dramas. The possibilities are wonderfully endless.

If you are giving the IPad to a special someone this year, make it even more special by BOBOwrapping it. A Medium sized wrap will be a perfect fit for the 8 x 10 x 2 inch box. If you’re giving it to me, I promise to give the wrap back! ^^

The 4th R: REFUSE, 4 Main Polluters that We Can Refuse Today

I’m sure by now you’ve heard of the huge patches of garbage floating about in our oceans. The massive one in the Pacific is estimated to be between the size of Texas and the size of the entire continental US.

Scientists say that in these garbage patches are 4 main polluters.

1. Plastic bags

2. Styrofoam cups

3. Styrofoam containers

4. Soda bottle lids

Albatross chicks fed plastic. Photo essay by Chris Jordan.

Photographer Chris Jordan traveled to the Midway Islands near the center of the Pacific garbage patch and captured images of decomposed bodies of albatross chicks that were fed plastic by their confused parents. Photos of the chicks document the actual stomach contents of birds and Jordan says that he did not touch a single piece of plastic in taking the photos.

Yesterday I heard David de Rothschild, who is sailing across the Pacific in a boat made from 12500 plastic bottles, say that in addition to the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), there indeed is a very important 4th R: Refuse.

How many of the above 4 things can you refuse to use today. This week? How about this year.

Let’s take it one day at a time and see just how much we can refuse together before it’s too late.

Lion Heart

While we celebrate Valentine’s Day here in the States, across East Asia, the biggest celebration of the year starts today: the Lunar New Year. The year of the tiger starts today, but my mind is full of the story of a very special lion. You may have seen this story a while back on the news, but it’s a great one to share with all your loved ones on this day of double celebration. It never fails to make me cry!

Harrod’s department store in London is famous for its legend of being able to sell you whatever it is you’d like to buy. One day in 1969, Ace Bourke and John Rendall were browsing the aisles when they came upon an adorable lion cub looking sad in cramped cage. The two friends fell in love with the cub, paid the equivalent of $4000, and left the store the proud owners of a pet lion they called Christian.

London in the 1960s, was a much different place than it is today and not only did Christian entertain customers in the custom furniture store where Ace and John worked, he also went for regular walks down the city streets. He was obviously a very special lion and never bit anyone which is more than I can say about Coco, my 10 pound maltepoo! Lions are social animals and are often seen lounging with their pride, one on top of another.

Playing wheelbarrow! Ever playful Christian is always up for fun and games.

To Christian, his human friends were his pride. He was gentle and he loved to play with the neighborhood children.

Christian playing with a neighborhood child

Whenever I see this video, I can’t help but bawl my eyes out at the wonder and the power of love. I am overwhelmed at the feeling that there are so many animals as well as children out there who are at this moment in need of love and good homes where they could thrive.

2010 is predicted to be a tumultuous year, but the Tiger’s influence offers us courage, while inviting bold actions and risk taking. I definitely feel the urge to take some bold actions to reach out to kids in need of love and affection and this year, BOBO will be partnering with various organizations whose mission is it to help kids every single day. Happy New Year and Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! Here’s to all those out there who love the story of Christian as much as I do and vow to live each day with the heart of a lion.

Majestic Christian adjusts to life in the wild and is the head of his own pride in Kenya.
